Conscious Impact
One of the things that our horses do when they eat hay is go to the bottom of the feeder where the ‘good stuff’ is. Quite often, I see hay flying across the feeder as they eat.
This morning, a bunch of hay landed on Annie’s head.
The horse who threw the hay kept eating. She was getting what she wanted. She was doing what they all do from time to time.
Annie barely flinched as the hay landed on her. She continued eating, looking up at me as I walked by cleaning the pen. (Perfect photo op)
I took a picture and then walked over and took the hay off of her head. She didn’t seem to care one way or the other. I am sure when she was ready, she would have dealt with it herself.
It got me thinking about us two-leggeds and how we often inadvertently ‘throw’ stuff on others.
Taking actions to get what we want.
Doing what we feel needs to be done to accomplish a task.
Leveraging and sometimes using relationships as we strive for that role.
Pushing and supporting as we lead our teams to perform.
Some of the ‘stuff’ we throw onto others is perfectly reasonable.
Sometimes, it has a negative impact.
Sometimes we are conscious of our impact.
Often we are not.
It got me thinking.
What would happen if we were more aware?
How would our workplaces, our homes and our communities be different?
On the flip side, what is our response when someone else’s actions negatively impact us?
Do we check our feelings? Our thoughts? And act consciously?
Or do we immediately react? Unaware of the impact we are having.
Coaching with horses is an experiential way to explore our awareness about our energy, emotions, boundaries and presence. As we become more aware of how we are and how we impact others, we can make conscious choices and have the impact that we want.
One on one coaching sessions have resumed at Red Chair Ranch and we are now booking into August.
